The Lazy Beauty Hack You Need: 12 Best Micellar Waters (2025)

TL;DR

Our favorite micellar water that we tested is the Bioderma H2O Micellar Water. It effectively removes makeup while hydrating the skin and comes in a generous bottle. For a product that purifies, cleanses and tones, we recommend the La Roche Posay Effaclar Micellar Water.

Washing your face is a must, especially if you wear makeup and sunscreen daily. Though there’s nothing like a foaming face wash and water, we don’t always have access to a sink—and sometimes lack the energy—honestly—to wash away the day. Enter: Micellar water. These soap-free, no-rinse cleansers contain tiny micelles (aka molecules) that sop up dirt, makeup, and oil, leaving you with clean skin.Micellar waters remove makeup and cleanse the skin in one simple step, making it ideal for minimalists or people who don’t have time for a multi-step skincare regimen. That said, you can use micellar water as the first step in a double cleanse routine—simply pour some out on a cotton pad, wipe the pad across your eyelids and face, and follow up with your cleanser of choice.

To narrow down the best micellar waters on the market, we tested 31 formulas in our Manhattan testing facility. Testers evaluated each micellar water based on feel, absorption, efficacy, hydration, and appearance post-cleanse to determine the products worth your money.

  • Feels great on the skin

  • Great for oily and sensitive skin types

What to Consider

  • Absorption could be better

Ingredient Highlights: Thermal spring water, glycerin | Size: 13.52 oz | Scent: Unscented

If you’re on the hunt for a micellar water that can not only remove dirt, makeup, and impurities, but also purify, cleanse, and tone the skin, look no further than La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Micellar Water. Dirt-encapsulating micelles work to remove dead skin, dirt, makeup, and even oils in a calm and nonirritating manner, resulting in a clean and hydrated feel. And while our tester notes that absorption isn’t the best, meaning you might need to use more product than you’re used to, it’s still well-worth it and gets the job done perfectly.

Monique, tester: "My skin definitely looked refreshed and after-glowed. No flakiness, soft and there was a matte finish (not shiny at all). It looks dry but not ashy."

What to Look for in Micellar Waters

  • Nonirritating Ingredients: Micellar waters are known for providing a gentler cleansing option. Look for micellar waters that are not irritating to the skin, with no harsh ingredients such as soaps and alcohol. “Avoid potential irritants such as alcohol, synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and artificial dyes, as these can strip the skin or cause sensitivity,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Kristina Collins, M.D.
  • Beneficial Ingredients: If you want your micellar water to provide even more benefits than cleansing and makeup removal, look for ones that contain additional ingredients, such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, oils, and plant extracts. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jacquiline Habashy-Hakim, M.D., is a fan of niacinamide, telling us it “is a Vitamin B3 derivative that not only acts as a hydrator, but also has anti-inflammatory properties and can aid with acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and pore size.” Dr. Collins goes on to rave about antioxidants like vitamin C and green tea extract, stating they “can offer additional protection against free radicals.”
  • Skin Type: Look for micellar water that is designed for your skin type. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, our experts recommend checking if the product is noncomedogenic and looking for as "purifying" or "mattifying" formulas. On the other hand, if you have dry or sensitive skin, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dusan Sajic, M.D., says to, “Look for terms like ‘hydrating,’ ‘soothing,’ or ‘gentle,’ and seek formulations with humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid), soothing extracts (chamomile), or barrier-supportive ingredients (panthenol).” For normal or combination skin types, Dr. Collins tells us to look for “a balanced micellar water with lightweight hydration, such as one containing cucumber or rose water, can maintain equilibrium without overloading the skin.”

How We Tested Micellar Waters

The Lazy Beauty Hack You Need: 12 Best Micellar Waters (71)

Below are the features our editors and contributors evaluated in the lab to determine our top picks.

  • Feel: The first thing we asked our testers to take note of is the feel of the product itself. What is the consistency like? Is it lightweight and comfortable on the skin, or does it feel heavy and clogging?
  • Absorption: Next, we paid attention to absorption levels, asking our testers if the micellar water absorbed quickly or if it felt like it left a film or residue on the skin.
  • Effectiveness: We determined if a micellar water actually removed dirt, grime, and makeup from the skin, and if so, how easy (or hard) it was to accomplish. We also asked our testers to note how skin felt after using it—did it strip or dry skin or leave an oily residue?
  • Hydration: Hydration levels were determined using the moisture reader in our lab, and we had each participant measure their levels before and after using micellar water. If their levels showed a significant increase, it was a good indicator that the product was replenishing the skin with hydration.
  • Appearance: Finally, we focused on appearance and specifically asked our testers if they noticed a difference in the texture and feel of their skin.

FAQ

  • What is micellar water used for?

“Micellar water is primarily used to remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil while providing a quick, gentle cleanse. It’s perfect for a double-cleansing routine, post-workout refresh, or even as a travel-friendly cleanser,” says Dr. Collins. It uses tiny fat molecules to degrease and remove impurities from the skin's surface, leaving behind a refreshed and clean face without harsh soaps, detergents, or stripping ingredients.

  • Does micellar water really clean your face?

Micellar water really does clean your face by using tiny molecules to break down and wash away makeup, sweat, sunscreen, and grime from your skin without water. “Micellar water effectively lifts away dirt, makeup, and impurities due to the action of the micelles,” shares Dr. Sajic. “However, it may not always remove heavier, waterproof makeup as effectively as an oil-based remover. For everyday use and light makeup removal, micellar water can be sufficient on its own. For those wearing heavy, long-wear cosmetics or sunscreen, it may serve best as the first step in a double cleansing routine.”

  • Does micellar water need to be rinsed off?

While micellar water does not need to be rinsed off, you might wish to do so. Some people will experience breakouts if there is a film left on the skin after applying and wiping away micellar water. You can double cleanse by using micellar water before your normal face cleanser.

  • What's the difference between micellar water vs. toner?

Micellar water breaks down and removes makeup, sunscreen, and grime on the skin. It’s usually the first step in your skincare routine. Toner, on the other hand, is typically used after cleansing to mop up any residual product, restore balance to your skin, minimize the look of pores, and balance the skin PH. “At this time, toner is not a product I go out of my way to recommend, because skincare has become so advanced in maintaining the skin PH that the step of toner is no longer needed,” says Dr. Habashy-Hakim.
